My 2015 Top 10

When I look back at 2015, I think about my year in style and what fashion principles I've either learned over the course of the year or have continued to embrace.  Here are my Top 10:

1.   Pattern-mixing is awesome. I've gotten more comfortable with it and will push the envelope in 2016.

2.   I love bold accessories, but I've also learned to pare things down and take a more minimalist approach at times.

3.   I'd much rather be overdressed than under-dressed.

Fringe Benefits

I love pieces that are versatile and easy to style.  This fringe shift dress is cute, comfortable, and can be worn in many different ways.

Make a Statement!

Statement clutches and handbags are great for adding an area of interest and focal point to any outfit.  You can use a neutral or basic ensemble to ground the piece, or you can take things completely over the top and add to an already powerful look.

A STATEMENT SILHOUETTE
An interesting shape can be a real conversation starter.  I found this adorable floral-inspired clutch in the sale bin at Nordstrom a few years ago.

Miami

I went to Miami with some friends last month for a quick weekend getaway and had a blast.  Now that I'm settled back into my day-to-day and the weather is getting colder, I'm wishing I was back in the warm climate...

We did a lot within a short period of time. Hanging out at the beach, some poolside action, dinner, drinks, spa treatments, and a little partying...

Here are some shots from my trip!

Matchy Matchy

In recent years, I've really embraced the concepts of pattern mixing and throwing in an unexpected color or texture. But every now and again I like to match the items in my ensembles.

Casual Friday...

This was my most recent "casual Friday" look.

'Ain't Nothin' Like the Real Thing Baby...

I try to add different textures and fabrics into my wardrobe, and leather is one of my favorites.  Although I do love faux leather, there is something about the smell and buttery soft feel of the real thing...

I was browsing on the Nordstrom site, a few months back, saw this sheath by Halogen and fell instantly in love. I visualized how the dress would fit me and ordered it.  Typically, I have a hard time with dresses. I usually have to go up a size to accommodate “the girls,” but this dress has a fabric panel in the back that allows a little breathing room.

Down in the Trenches

I saw this Michael Kors trench at Neiman Marcus several months back and was immediately drawn to it.  It's a beige trenchcoat...very basic, but I fell in love with the pleats.

Autumn Flowers

I wore this fabulous floral embroidered skirt from Bebe to work this past week.  A perfect look for the Fall.

Summer Highlights, Part 2

I was supposed to wear this fab skirt by Nicole Miller for my birthday last month...
...but I never got a chance to plan an event/outing that would warrant wearing such a piece, so I opted for this black and white handkerchief dress instead.

Summer Highlights, Part 1

Yes, it has been a couple of months since my last post.  That’s not because I had "bloggers block" or anything like that, but sometimes you have to shift your focus from one area of your life to another, because there just aren’t enough hours in the day.
I had a pretty good summer and have a couple of outfits that I’ll share in this post.  I also have a few more that I'll share in my next post.
This is what I wore to my cousin’s birthday dinner.  The skirt is the focal point of the outfit, and it’s by Sofistafunk.  If you’re not familiar with the line, please visit their site and take a look.  The skirts are absolutely FAB and I would dress like this every day if I could.

A Tee and a Pair of Leggings

I did a little hanging out recently and decided to keep it pretty simple.

Lazy Sunday

Yesterday was blistering hot and I decided to cool off by going to the movies. I threw on this flowy dress that I purchased last year.  I wanted to keep it cute and casual.

A Black and White Affair

My younger cousin recently turned 16 and a Sweet 16 was thrown in her honor.  It was a black and white affair and that was right up my alley because you know how much I love that color combination.

Polka Dots With a Pop of Pink

Yesterday I attended my son's "moving up ceremony."  He'll be a high schooler this Fall, and I'm shocked at how quickly these last few years have flown by.

This is what I wore, and I have to admit I felt a tad bit overdressed.  Most folks were on the extremely casual to casual side. But oh well, I'd rather be overdressed than under-dressed.

Denim Shirt White Skirt

I went to brunch with a close friend this past Sunday and wore this adorable skirt and denim vest combo.  I actually wore this skirt once before for July 4th last year, in a very similar fashion.

Funky Eyewear

In my previous post, "How To AccessorEYES," I discussed using eyewear as a tool to add personality to your looks. I wear prescription lenses, and in my early days I wasn't a fan of wearing glasses.  I have since learned to not only embrace my opticals, but my eyewear is now a carefully considered part of my wardrobe.

I own several pair of prescription glasses and due to my RX, they can be very costly, so I do the following to help alleviate the financial burden.
  1. I incorporate eyewear into my budget and treat it as an expense.
  2. My insurance allows me one new pair of prescription lenses per year, and a new pair of frames every other year, so I take advantage of those benefits religiously.
  3. I budget enough money in my Flexible Spending Account to cover expenses that exceed what my insurance covers.
  4. I get my eyes examined every year, and if my prescription changes only slightly, I will forego updating all my eyeglasses with the new prescription.
Now onto the good stuff. I've been lusting after these Alain Mikli frames for quite some time now.  I purchased them from my friends over at Omega Optical.

The Four Boroughs

I recently designed a new t-shirt-"The Four Boroughs."  It pays homage to 4 of the 5 boroughs in New York City.(Area code of Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island)

One Dress Three Ways

The  basic maxi dress.  The simplicity of its design makes it particularly versatile.  I'll be mixing and matching this all summer long.  There are endless styling options for this type of dress, and I have included 3 in this post.

LOOK 1
This dress actually has spaghetti straps and a cutout back. With spaghetti straps, I generally layer a tank or other shirt underneath to conceal my bra straps.

Tulle in Motion

I attended a cocktail party this past Sunday and was elated for the opportunity to wear this fab tulle overlay skirt.

My New Favorite Pump

The classic pointed toe pump is a staple in the closets of many women.  Some higher priced favorites include:
I love a good shoe as much as any fabulous fashionista; however, some of those options are not budget-friendly.  I have a love affair with shoes, but I also have to be practical, so I opt for versions that are easier on the pockets.

My new favorite pump is "Tatiana" by Nine West.  It's high enough to be super sexy, but comfortable enough to wear all day, and not too much toe cleavage, which I'm not a fan of.

And you know when I find something I like, and it's affordable, I acquire it in multiple colors/patterns/textures.

I have black pony hair,

Spring Flowers

Spring has been hit or miss, in terms of the weather, but that hasn't stopped me from incorporating Spring colors and themes into my wardrobe.

I love these floral print shoes.  The colors allow me to pair them with many things.

The Thing About Spring...

The thing about Spring is that it's sometimes still very chilly - almost Winter-like. So I use this as an opportunity to get in a few more wears of my Fall/Winter wardrobe.

I'm actually happy, because I didn't get a chance to post any pix of me wearing this faux leather a-line skirt from Halogen.  I love this piece and have worn it numerous times over the past several months

This time, I paired it with a fitted t-shirt with a sheer inset at the top.  I layered a black stretchy tank underneath.
I used an oblong scarf as a belt.
Tote by Michael Kors.

Yes, I have 3 different patterns going on here. And I just love how it all comes together.

And the tie...Menswear is so sexy!

Personalize Your "Chain Store" Purchases

I'll be the first to admit that I shop at chain stores.  (Express, Banana Republic, H&M, etc.) I'm familiar with the layout of the stores, I know what types of pieces they carry, and I know how the sizes run - so shopping is a breeze.  Another benefit to shopping at chain stores, is that they're located just about everywhere - so if you're in unfamiliar territory and need to buy an article of clothing, you can pop into one of the stores and voila…quick and easy shopping.

However, shopping at chain stores has its disadvantages too...the primary one being that you're likely to see 50 million ladies with the same items.  Who wants to walk around looking like a clone of everyone else?  Individuality is very important to me, so I've developed some strategies that help create a unique look when wearing mass-produced and widely distributed apparel.

Back to Basics

Blue jeans and a white t-shirt.  Simplicity at its best.

Classy.
Comfortable.
Clean.
Sexy!

I wore this to see "Furious 7."  It was fantastic.  I loved the fast cars, the action, the testosterone and the hunky men. :-)

It's a Wrap

I picked up this adorable wrap top last week while conducting my workshop at Career Wardrobe's "Smart & Sexy Day."  The Wardrobe Boutique has some amazing finds -I got this amazing Oscar de La Renta top for a steal.

This piece is ideal for someone like me who has narrow hips. I used it to created volume in my lower half.

Another Addition to My Tulle Kit

For those of you who follow me regularly, you know that I'm always looking for places to go, so I can throw on something dressy. So I was super excited about Smart & Sexy Day, not only because of my opportunity to interact with women and share my message of connecting the outside to the inside, but I also got to wear a fab outfit.  You know I'm a fool for tulle.

Black and white cropped top from Express (old)
I layered a black tank underneath to avoid unwanted skin exposure.

Career Wardrobe: Smart & Sexy Day

When you begin surrounding yourself by things you love, doors start to open. A very inspiring mentor and friend referred me for a wonderful opportunity taking place later this month.  I am so excited to announce that I'll be participating in Career Wardrobe's "Smart & Sexy Day" on March 26th.

Career Wardrobe is a fantastic organization that provides appropriate work attire, education, and services to women transitioning into the workforce.  With Women's History Month in full swing, it's important that each one of us lends a helping hand in some way to help elevate and empower our sisters.

Smart & Sexy Day is a day focused on inspiring women with workshops, motivational talks, free bras courtesy of Ariela and Associate's Smart & Sexy brand, as well as a free business outfit from Career Wardrobe.

My workshop, "Fashion Fundamentals," will cover a range of topics, including: understanding the power and impact of style, selecting the right looks to complement your body, and scoring fabulous and fashionable finds on a budget.
Information about Smart & Sexy Day, and the ability to register is included in the link below. Smart and Sexy Day will take place at the Career Wardrobe boutique on 19th and Spring Garden in Philadelphia, PA. Hope to see you there!

50 Shades of Slay...

Yes - we all get our style inspiration from somewhere (or from many places), and I happen to LOVE the style of the ladies on FOX's hit show Empire. I am particularly fond of Anika Calhoun's wardrobe.  When I saw her on the screen in this coat - it immediately got my attention.

So I did a little googling, and found out it was available at Bloomingdale's.  It also happened to be on sale, so you know I hopped right on it.

It's a showstopper!

Yes, back to black and white.  You know it's my favorite color combination...

I threw a faux leather cropped jacket over a flowy button down shirt.

Winter Wonderland

My niece recently turned 16, and a fancy Winter Wonderland themed party was held in her honor.  The immediate family wore silver and ice blue to coordinate with the theme.

I initially had a difficult time finding a silver dress, but was fortunate to get my hands on this Aidan Mattox number for a steal at Neiman Marcus.

Cute in the Cold...

It's been extremely cold here on the East Coast.  I've considered foregoing the cuteness factor because it's so frigid.  Here enters the "statement coat."

It's fabulous, it's warm and you can wear just about anything underneath, because the coat is going to turn everything up a notch.

I've also been wearing my over-the-knee boots a lot - for additional leg coverage.

My Hair

I get a lot of compliments and questions about my hair.  Many of the questions are inquiries about how I get my hair to do what it does.  This post provides a step-by-step guide for those who want to know.

1) I get my hair cut by a barber every 3-4 weeks.

This is what my hair looks like right after I've gotten it cut.

He Said, She Said: A Woman is Sexiest When Wearing...

So I was recently telling someone about my personal style evolution and how my fashion preferences have changed over the years.  When I was in my 20's, I was really trying to figure out who I was, and in some respects, trying to prove I was an adult. I wanted to declare to the world that I was a strong, independent, and  sexy woman...or at least I thought I was.  So I pushed the envelope at times, and it was okay for that period in my life - I guess...

I began realizing that sexy means different things to different people, and that sexiness is not necessarily measured by how revealing your clothes are. At this point in my life, I don't always want to/have to put my goods on display.  I want to be a little more mysterious and pique curiosity. That's not to say I won't "put it out there" every now and again, but when I do, it's done more purposefully and strategically.

So, I began wondering - what do my peers and friends consider sexy? I spoke to several males and females - to get both sides of the story - and here's what they had to say.

Blueberries and Grapes

On Friday, my girlfriends and I went out for a pre-Valentine's Day dinner- aka "Galentine's Day."  I think that dinner will be the start of an annual tradition.

I didn't want to wear red, because that would have been too expected.  I decided on "blueberries and grapes" instead.

When I was in New York last month to see The Lion King, I picked up this dress from H&M.  I saw it and instantly fell in love.  I threw a long-sleeved t-shirt underneath for warmth.

Friend or Faux?

I love leather apparel - It adds such an interesting contrast and texture to an outfit, but it can be expensive. In recent years, a number of leather alternatives have been introduced, and the quality has improved significantly as compared to the not-so-soft-and-supple “pleather” that is reminiscent of my adolescence.

These new non-leather options are fantastic.  In some cases, you can’t tell the difference between faux leather and real leather, and these options are so much more affordable...
The keys to selecting faux leather that looks like the real thing are:

a) To find pieces that have some texture. Some of the more realistic looking leather alternatives have characterization, wrinkles, and slight color variations.

b) To select pieces that are butter-soft and supple.

There is no in-between here...

I have recently added a few faux leather pieces to my wardrobe and absolutely love them!  Below is a favorite of mine.  I actually thought it was real when I purchased it.  It's a Vince Camuto dress and I purchased it from Fox's in New York over a year ago.  LOVE this dress, and have styled it various ways.

What I Recently Wore to WERK

I have a Monday through Friday 9-5 gig in Corporate America.  I'm fortunate to have a little latitude in terms of my office attire, so I inject a little personality into my ensembles when and where I can.

Here's a recent outfit that made me feel professional, confident, and fashionable.

Faux leather sleeveless peplum top from H&M. I layered a long-sleeved cropped top underneath for warmth.

A Night Out

I saw The Lion King in NY this past Friday.  It was pretty cold, but that didn't stop me from getting a little fancy.

My blouse is actually a leotard from Bebe, which I absolutely love.  I didn't have to worry about it creeping out at the waistline.
