Coach or First Class?

Coach recently announced their plans to acquire Kate Spade. What an interesting marriage! Coach has been one of my favorite handbag brands for many years because of its “accessible luxury” factor. They produce quality leather goods, with the essence of a luxury brand, at an accessible price point .

I’m really more of a shoe gal, and although I like a nice handbag, I only own a handful in a few neutral and statement colors. Because of the high cost of a good handbag, I have the expectation that they last for several years.  I’ve owned Gucci bags, Cole Haan, Elie Saab, Micheal Kors, Kate Spade, etc., but Coach leather bags have served me very well. I absolutely LOVE the quality of the leather, and the bags last for years and years. I’m not talking about the Coach outlet bags, I’m talking about bags from the full-priced stores – that I only purchase when I can catch them on sale. Since I am a longtime Coach customer, I’m on their mailing list, and receive coupons a few times a year. I also wait for department store sales, such as the Macy’s “Friends and Family” event, that extends their 25% discount to brands that don’t frequently go on sale.

Now some folks may look down on Coach bags because they are not perceived to be in the upper-echelon of luxury, but that’s okay. Everyone has their own personal style, and in terms of handbags, I prefer quality over cost. I don’t want to buy a handbag and then have to run out and buy a replacement in a few months, or even in a few years. And Coach has undergone a transformation over the past several years. They've revamped their stores to provide a more exclusive and boutique-like feel, introduced fresh and innovative designs, and have introduced more high-end styles for those who want the next level in luxury - all while maintaining their commitment to quality. To me, that’s a win-win.

So back to Kate Spade - I’m looking forward to seeing how Coach breathes new life into the brand. Coach and Kate Spade have different audiences, style perspectives, and a pretty small percentage of overlap in customers who purchase handbags from both brands. So the Coach and Kate Spade brands are less competitive and offer Coach an opportunity to expand its customer-base. I’ll be keeping my eyes on the developments related to the Kate Spade acquisition, and in the meantime, I’ll continue to enjoy my Coach bags. These two are the most recent additions to my handbag family and are fantastic everyday pieces.

This messenger bag is located in the “men’s” section of the Coach stores and site, but it’s the perfect size for my essentials and it’s very clean and unfussy.

Here's a closeup.

and THIS is my new "everyday bag." It's made of a quality pebbled leather and suede combo, and is extremely roomy. I LOVE this bag.
