As I continue to reluctantly embrace the changing weather, I’m still taking the opportunity to incorporate autumnal colors into the mix whenever possible. If you’re in the northeast, take a look around at the changing landscape – it’s giving cues as to which colors are great for this time of year.
This past Tuesday, on election day, I wore black – not necessarily a fall color, but a definite “power color.” I purchased this maxi dress from Express a while back. The material is a little on the thin side, so I layered a pair of leggings underneath and wore OTK leather and stretch fabric boots to make it more weather-appropriate. I topped it off with my faux patent leather and fur jacket from Asos.
My next look included a mustard-colored boyfriend blazer and my paper bag high-waisted Top Shop trousers that I bought a couple of years ago. I haven’t worn these in quite a while because the styling was a little challenging for me. Sometimes high-waisted pants aren’t flattering, but throwing a blazer on top did the trick. I accessorized with an animal print pocketbook and metallic loafers. The purse was another item that I hadn’t worn in a while, and I’m trying to put more effort into incorporate my lesser-worn pieces into my every day looks.
My “Casual Friday” outfit consisted of a pair of cuffed “barely boot” jeans from Express and a faux suede vest with fringes from Express. This vest is another piece that has been sitting in my closet for quite a while without me touching it. I bought this vest a few years ago when the fringe trend was at its height. It was a choice between the black and this gorgeous “paprika” color. I figured that I had enough black in my wardrobe and I needed to add more color. For a while I felt that fringe was overdone and put that piece on ice. I decided to bring it out again. That’s the funny thing about purchasing items that are trendy – you may feel limited in terms of when and how long you can wear the items.
I topped it off with this gorgeous mustard topcoat by J.Crew and tailored derby shoes by The Office of Angela Scott. The coat adds the perfect pop of color to brighten up those dreary fall days.
And today, I wore my denim boilersuit from Forever 21 (old), suede trench and suede slouchy booties. Brown messenger bag from Coach.
Think about incorporating "the colors of fall" into your wardrobe and find ways to breathe new life into your rarely-worn pieces.
